Some thoughts on marriage

After thinking about it for a very long time I have come to the conclusion that the reason most people get married is for the security of commitment from their spouse. They need that promise that they will be together forever.

The need for security is of course because of insecurities. If the individual is secure enough and is not dependent on another then the need for marriage disappears.

Promise: A declaration assuring that one will or will not do something; a vow. (from dictionary.com)

People change and making a declaration that you are going to be happy with the same person for the rest of your life seems foolish to me. I could never make that promise. That promise seems phony from every way that I look at it. No one can be absolutely sure they will remain with the same person for the rest of their life.

If both people in the relationship are secure with themselves and are not dependent on the other then there is no point in getting a document that legally binds you together.

Don't get mad.
